Her eyes popped open; she stared at the ceiling, trying to regain consciousness between her soft, cozy bed and the other world that seemed to somehow merge with hers. Arabela couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that the man she just dreamt about could actually be the one. The dream was vivid; She could see his face still in her mind. He stood a little taller than her five-foot-seven stature. Big brown eyes, a chiseled chin, full and somewhat curly hair that sat so perfectly on his head. And her bracelet, Arabela grabbed her wrist, spinning the thinly roped gold bracelet around, feeling the tiny blue gems in between her fingers. What was the significance of the bracelet that she saw him wearing in her dream? It was just like the one her grandmother had given her as a young girl, the one she held so close to her heart. But she was almost certain it was an original handmade piece made just for her. Still, she knew what she saw in her dream, and he was definitely wearing the same one. More questions than answers flooded her mind.
She turned her head to look at the time.
“10:30 already.” she sighed, burying her head in her pillow.
She wanted to stay in bed. Maybe he would show up in her dreams again, but she had to get ready to start the day. Ria would soon be at her doorstep pounding on her door, eager to get to the Fallas of Valencia festival. They had been waiting all year for this night full of fun, food, and celebrations. Maybe he would be there. Her mind threw her back into her dream, seeing his face again. Her stomach rushed with flutters, thinking about the feeling of his hand grabbing hers and gripping it so tightly. Even if it was just a dream, she could still feel his warmth.
“Footsteps.” She thought she heard footsteps, as she heard a knock on the door, followed by a voice.
“Bella, you better be dressed; I’m coming up,” Ria’s voice echoed up the stairs into her room.
Arabela jumped out of bed and grabbed her robe from behind her door.
“Knock, knock, get yourself up Bell; we have a million things to do before the festival.”
It was evening, and the mixture of the coal-black skies, glimmering lights, and the smell of heat and sweat somehow triggered anticipation inside of her; she looked around the crowd as everyone else looked up.
“They are gorgeous this year,” Ria yelled in Arabela’s ear over the booming of the fireworks. Standing arm in arm, the girls together looked up as the reflection of the magenta and gold lights reflected off of their eyes like diamonds, casting a shadow on their faces.
“This is the ending to the most perfect night!” Arabela sighed, laying her head on Ria’s shoulder.
“We need to walk around and look for, you know who, him,” Ria yelled over the fireworks.
“Oh, come on, Ria! I told you it was just a dream. He’s not real.” Somehow, hoping to convince herself of her own words as they hit her ears.
The two stared at each other, smiling as their eyes glimmered under the fireworks- Valencia always promised good fireworks, but for some reason, this year, they seemed more special. Antonio’s mind darted between his admiration for all the colors and his hopeful curiosity about her, whoever she was.
“Antonio, bro, catch up,” Diego yelled, waving his hand above the crowd, catching Antonio’s eyes as he rummaged his way to him.
“Hey man, what did I miss? I came straight from work,” Antonio’s voice rang steadily above the noise.
“I’m glad you made it for the end,” Diego’s voice trailed off.
Antonio couldn’t bear to admit the real reason he wouldn’t miss this night was that he still saw her all day long in his mind. Maybe he was being drawn to this moment in time to meet her there, he wasn’t sure. The dream played like a movie; her five-foot-seven stature, long black hair, skin that almost glistened with a luminescence. Her gold bracelet illuminated blue under the night’s skylight. He couldn’t shake it. It was just like the one his aunt had given him, but he couldn’t understand the significance. His mind couldn’t make sense of why they both had the same bracelet and what this could mean.
He never saw fireworks in his dream, but his heart felt them, and he couldn’t help but remember how the bracelet was shining blue under some kind of bright light.
“Hey man, let’s walk around and grab a drink before the street stands close, I’m parched,” Diego said, wiping the sweat off his forehead.
“Alright, cool, let’s go,” Antonio said as he cautiously looked around in case she might be there.
Antonio and Diego walked away from the crowd toward the hotdog stand.
“One water, please.” Diego handed the hotdog man a Euro.
“Hey, I told Liam I would be back in front of gate six by eleven. I think we need to head that way,” Diego murmured between his guzzles of water.
Antonio and Diego walked side by side, shuffling back through the crowd nearing toward gate six, Diego stretching his neck to see if he could see Liam waiting for them yet.
“Oh, excuse me!” Antonio gasped as he nearly ran into Ria, walking past him going the other way.
“You’re good!” she yelled back, flashing a smile.
Walking quickly toward the crowd, Arabela and Ria remained close, arm in arm, so as not to lose each other within all of the people.
“Woah!” Arabela felt a small shock travel up her arm, looking down at her bracelet with wonder as it illuminated blue.
“What’s wrong?” Ria mumbled, narrowing in on Arabela’s face.
“The bracelet, it just, um, shocked me.” Rubbing her arm, she noticed that the blue light from the bracelet had become dimmer.
“Are you serious, Bell? It’s gotta be a sign,” Ria exclaimed, grabbing Arabela’s hand.
“If I felt it, maybe he did too. We need to turn around, he’s here, I can feel it.”
Arabela and Ria turned against the crowd, walking the opposite way as the others, remaining hand in hand to not lose each other…
Antonio grabbed his wrist, he felt it, almost a shock-like sensation. Antonio looked down at his gold bracelet that was now illuminating blue, just like in his dream. Beside himself in disbelief, he could feel the breath almost leave his body for a few moments, breathing in deeply when he realized what was happening. Antonio swiftly turned around to look behind him, toward the two girls who had just passed him. Suddenly, his eye caught a very familiar, distinct glimmer of blue on one of the girls’ wrists.
“Oh, man! I gotta go back there!” Antonio proclaimed loud enough to wake a city.
“What, man? No way! Liam will be here any minute. I’m not about to get lost in that crowd when they all pour our way,”
Antonio heard his friend’s words but could hardly keep his composure as it felt like his dream was about to play out before his eyes. He wondered if she had felt it too, that small shock that traveled up his left arm. But he couldn’t see her. Arabela was now out of his view, but he knew he had to find her.
“No, I gotta go! I’ll text you. Don’t wait for me!” Antonio pointed at Diego as he pulled away, turning back toward the crowd.
But she was gone. He lost her. Arabella had disappeared into the crowd.
“I’m not losing her for good,” he said to himself.
“You better lead me back to her,” he said, swiftly walking through the crowd and talking to his bracelet.
He walked faster and faster until he felt the buzz again on his wrist. The bracelet, she was near.
“Excuse me, sorry,” he repeated, grabbing shoulders and pushing people aside.
Finally, he saw them, two girls walking his way, the ones he had passed just before his bracelet buzzed. He felt it again, grabbing his wrist and seeing the blue color illuminate off the small gems. Just then, his eyes met hers, but quickly looking at her bracelet glowing blue, his eyes steadily darting between her wrist and her eyes. They stood there, facing each other; it was as if time had stood still. Neither of them spoke, Ria in utter disbelief at what she was seeing transpire before her.
“I, I, Oh, go ahead, no, you go first.” They both awkwardly managed to speak at the same time, laughing and fumbling over their words.
“Okay, let me make sense of this,” Antonio said quickly as he focused in on Arabela’s big brown eyes, the same eyes as in his dream.
“I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that you also had a dream last night. A dream- about, me.” He could feel his lips quiver as his words escaped him.
“Yes, I did. I can’t believe this is happening. This is all so strange, I, I, I don’t know what to think right now.” Her eyes never leaving his.
“Our bracelets, there has to be some kind of significance. Mine was handmade by my aunt, so none of this makes sense to me, but it feels right. I have to know everything,” Antonio said, reaching for her hand giving it a slight squeeze.
“I can’t believe this is real,” She whispered.
“I don’t know what this is, but I just know that I was meant to find you. My heart was meant to find you, and it did.”
Arabela’s eyes darted toward Ria; her face riddled with a million emotions.
“I’m going to be over here, Bella, you know, if you need me.” Ria’s words become almost an echo.
“I have the feeling its going to be a long night,” Antonio confessed with an unbroken smile, as him and Arabela sat down, right under the moonlight.
